Digi-Talk: The Pultec EQ and version 1.1 of the TDM Plug-Ins

The Pultec EQP-1A for TDM
This month, Universal Audio is releasing our digital recreation of the Pultec EQ, along with version 1.1 of the 1176LN/SE and LA2A. The 1.1 version of the UA plugins for Pro Tools feature multi-mono support, as well as some fixes for automation.

In order to preserve the interaction between frequency bands, we upsample the input signal to 192kHz.

UA’s Pultec is exactly like the UAD-1 version, and initial response from beta testers has been great. UA, in typical fashion, has taken a different approach to modeling this sought-after piece of classic analog gear. While most engineers study the schematic of an analog EQ to aid in developing their emulation, they compromise the accuracy of the filters in order to increase instance count. UA’s engineers study the schematic as well, but take the development one step further. In order to preserve the interaction between frequency bands, we upsample the input signal to 192kHz. This allows UA engineers the precision and resolution to accurately model every nuance of the Pultec’s unique circuitry. For a model, we chose a highly recommended “golden” unit that had been residing in a high-end recording studio for quite some time.

Since we upsample in the Pultec, instance counts are not what you would expect: at all sample rates, 44.1k through 192k, you get two mono instances per DSP, and one stereo instance, on both Mix and HD systems. While this is not a high instance count, we’d rather have a Pultec EQ plugin that behaves exactly like a Pultec EQ, rather than an approximation, and we figured our customers would too.

For even more detailed information on the Pultec and how it was created, check out the Ask the Doctors segment of our June Webzine.
