The mix engineer, Pierre Vervloesem writes:
Hello there, here's "Psycho Scout" from the band Flat Earth Society, recorded live in a large studio. I mix it in Cubase SX using mainly UA. The bass drum: for the mic inside, a Steinberg noise gate and a Pultec with 6db of 30 and 8 of 4, the bandwith on sharp. The mic outside, a Steinberg noise gate and Wave linear EQ with lot of air Then I made a copy of the mic inside and a Cambridge with a low pass and a high pass with a 1176 for a 7 to 10 db compression to add attack in the mids. The snare: top and bottom to a group with 1176 attack 1.5, release 7 ratio 4 for 3 db of compression followed by a Pultec Pro with 5db of 8k, 6db of 1.5k, 2db of 200Hz and the bandwith on 6. Overhead: 1176 attack on 1.5, release on 7, ratio on 4 for 3 db of compression, a Waves linear phase with a lot of high (it was a stereo ribbon mic) Precision Limiter with here and there 4 to 6 db of limiting. Ambience mic: Cambridge with high and low pass (I only need the mids) to a 1176 with attack on 3, release on 6, ratio on 20 with 10 db of compression. This mic was panned on one side then a made a copy of the ambience an pass it thru Nigel and panned it to the other side. The (contra)bass: mic to Precision Multiband and lot of reduction between 127 Hz and 255 Hz followed by a 1176 attack on 2, release on 4,ratio on 4 for 3db of compression. DI: Precision Multiband for a lot of highs reduced, mid untouched and sub under control, followed by a 1176 with same control as mic but 5db of compression. Piano: Pultec, 9db of 4k(very nasty), 2 db of attenuation on 30 Hz, bandwith on 4. Saxes: 1176 attack on 1, release on 6, ratio on 4 for 3db of compression. Trombones and tuba: untouched. Trombone solo: in a fuzz. Clarinets: untouched. Clarinet solo: Precision eq for lot of air then EX-1M to completely squash it then a copy of the track thru a fuzz and a little bit of delay with the RS-1. Trumpets: untouched. Accordeon: Cambridge highpass. I didn't used any reverb only ambience mics. Master: Precision Limiter (a lot of limiting, I must admit, but it's not really a band for jazz purist) |
