With Universal Audios recent release of 3.1 drivers for the UAD-1 Powered Plug-Ins card, our first For Purchase plug-in was made available to the public-- the Cambridge EQ; Also with the 3.1 release, a clever and very transparent copy protection system was put in place.
There are no cumbersome challenge/response mechanisms to deal with, making it much easier when changing computers or reinstalling your System software.
Copy protection is rarely something people get excited about, but with UAs implementation of copy protection for the UAD-1, you may be pleasantly surprised. Comparatively speaking, the experience is very liberating.
The great thing about UAs copy protection implementation is that the authorization is tied to your specific UAD-1(s) rather than to a specific computer. This makes for very easy copy protection management for the user. There are no cumbersome challenge/response mechanisms to deal with, making it much easier when changing computers or reinstalling your System software. Each UAD-1 card is unique, and your authorization key is generated for your specific card(s). Whats truly liberating is that you have the freedom to use your cards wherever you want, on any machine. Additionally, the .reg file will work on both Mac and Windows; so if you move your card from a Mac to a PC (or have the cards in a Magma that is moved between machines), the same .reg file will work. Very cool.
The Devils in the Details
Up to four cards can be used per system; therefore the user is permitted up to four authorizations for every For Purchase plug-in. Universal Audio keeps records of which and how many cards are registered to each user. If a user buys an additional card, the user may contact UA and register the new card. The plug-in will not work on the new card until the new card has been authorized. With each additional card purchased, the user must re-submit his hardware i.d.s including his old i.d.(s) to utilize his For Purchase plug-in on the new card(s). This is done by opening the UAD-1 meter application and copying your current hardware i.d.s from the UAD-1 Authorizations window into the web form; we then send you an additional .reg file for your newly purchased plug-in which is added to your UAD-1 registry.
The most important thing to remember is to
back up the registration files you receive for your plug-ins.
This is what you paid for. This will save you the time, and us the hassle of re-sending your .reg files every time you upgrade your system. If you move your card(s) to another machine, or reinstall your OS, just reload your saved .reg via the Load Settings pull-down from the UAD-1 meter for the Mac, or by simply double-clicking the .reg file icon for PC.
If you are buying your first paid plug-in, go to the Mackie store and follow the instructions. The Cambridge is currently available for $149 through
Mackies website.
When purchasing future UAD-1 Powered Plug-Ins, re-submission of your UAD-1s hardware i.d.s will not be necessary (although we may still ask for them). With your next purchase, the authorization for the new plug-in will simply be added to the existing registration file. Re-submission is only necessary when adding new cards.
See pages 49 thru 55 of your version 3.1 UAD-1 Powered Plug-Ins manual for more details about the UAD-1s copy protection, and instructions on its use.
