I love this emulation
I think or better listen to my ears, that's the best 1176 plug-in on the market!

Compressor with character
This compressor has a very unique quality to it. If you like color for drums or guitar, look no further. Very easy to dial in just the right squish. The 160 is NOT for those looking for clear, clean & pristine.

A "Must Have"
I was surprised when I've heard this plug for the first time how the signal get more "thickness"! Whatever you need, OH's on Drums, A-Guitars, Vocals ect. Only a light breeze and you hear the difference, do it !

Versatile and real
This reverb is pretty amazing, I don't have any experience with the real deal but nevertheless this plugin is a dream to use!

very controled Reverb
since i bought this Reverb, the use of other reverbs was diminished, specially 141. Pure Plate is very warm and controled reverb, you have not any mess in your voice and any problem about changing the character of your sound, defenetly it is my first plate choice on pop, fusion and jazz projects,

Incredibly
I have one device from pultec. I find that these plugins sound like original devices. Now this is my favorite plugin! I use it in every mix.

Dark & Lovely
This Tape emulation is definitely better on some sounds than others. For me it's just wonderful on bass, sub bass, and drums. If you want to knock excess brightness or harshness off of a sound this could work too. I'm glad I bought it.

The Quintessential Reverb
What more can be said about the Lexicon 224? It is simply the reverb all of us from a certain age remember as the sound on so many records we loved and, of course, Universal Audio nails it. It is everything a reverb should be. It adds depth and warmth without blurring the track and is easy to control and mold to whatever you need to get exactly what you want. My new (old) go-to 'Verb.

Legacy comparison
Wish I'd have read up on the UA Appolo quad before I parted with my hard earned, only to discover that all the "bundled plug ins" are the legacy versions and I'll have to fork out the total price for the upgrades with no discount. Well miffed about it to be honest after listening to the difference between the Legacy versions and the full monty the Legacy versions were way different to my ears. I see I'm not the only customer to gripe about this matter either!! The 4 stars are for the "real deal" versions that I didn't get and not the Legacy versions that they bundled with my Apollo quad. Hey ho I'll be doing a lot more reading up before I buy anything else from UA.

The Leveler!
Love this simple compressor. It works great and sounds great. You can't make a mistake with it. Love it on acoustic guitars and the occasional vocal that's paired with an 1176 or LA2A depending on the speed of the vocal. With most audio I compress around 3 db's...sometimes with peaks around 5. Its just an all 'rounder tool!

Sold one to get the Apollo and got the plugin
I loved my VoxBox. Great for vocals and bass especially. Had a chance to A/B with an Avid interface and the VoxBox hardware and then the plugin from UA with an Apollo 18x24. Sold the VoxBox and bought the Universal Audio Apollo with the plugin and bought extra plugs as well. Never looked back!

Take the time to experiment ... and use more than one ....!
I wasn't going to write a review, but now that I've owned this plugin for a few months I thought I'd reach out to those that don't own it and say this ... If you decide to demo this plugin with a view to buying it you'll only have 14 days to demo it (pleading phone calls aside etc etc). I would suggest lining up a bunch of tracks and then doing the following:
Check your levels - Don't send the tracks too hot to the Ampex .. leave yourself some headroom and this may mean that the defaults are running too hot to for your tunes to begin with. Working out where in your compression chain to place the Ampex is a matter of taste and program material. The manual suggests at the very end of the chain - I disagree.
Read the manual - understand that there are shades of colour all over the place on the GUI of this plugin .. from input gain to transformer, from EQ types to Bias settings .. don't write off what things like crosstalk etc can actually do .. the results are subtle BUT cumulative.
Spend a few days going back and forth between mixes - the different vibes that the Ampex can impart to your tunes is subtle BUT massive. It takes time to work out where the Ampex can take your tunes and those enhancements further.
Don't get too wound up by the Bias controls GUI when using a mouse etc etc .. THEY ARE DREADFUL ... BUT ... with a little practice zoning in on the control you'll be glad your not using a screw driver whilst crouched on the floor behind the machine in a different room from the Monitors ... you could almost forgive UAD for inflicting just a little of that pain.
It's a STUNNING piece of software and a massive achievement.
ENJOY.

Wide Boy
A really good attempt at re-creating the original, however Roland units have proven not to be easily copied both in software & hardware. If you're a Roland fan stick to the originals, if you just want a good sounding wide open subtile chorus go for the Studio D.
