Upfront
The Avalon gives a very in your face sound. No wonder it’s used a lot in Hip Hop, great sounding pre, not for everyone but when you find the right artist for it you’l love it.

I did not know I needed this limiter until I tried it! Nothing else in my arsenal sounds like it! I tried to make other plugins I have sound like it and I cannot! The way it breaks up perfectly to provide saturation, warmth and colour to the sound is second to none! A true must-have!

I’m not Britney Spears
Believe it or not that statement is actually true. I’m not the vocalist on all my projects. So I only got a little time to play around with this plugin. And only the neve 1073 and the uad tube preamp to compare it to. So from the start it’s had it’s work cut out. I did try to drive it hard. But I didn’t seem to be able to achieve that. This is definitely a plugin I’m going to have to get used to then resubmit a review.

I can only speak from a VO perspective but punching in and out between the hardware and this plug is ridiculous close. Would a seasoned producer on the other end of a VO session notice a difference if they were expecting the hardware preamp? Nope. Not even once. It reacts with such a tactile, analogue fee, there is no reason to keep the hardware, in my humble opinion.

My favorite UAD plugin!!!
I was blown away after demoing this plugin. It’s like a warm blanket wrapping around anything it touches. Sounds great on anything, especially vocals. I just can’t believe how close it is to the actual hardware. It not only sounds fantastic, you can also emulate pretty much any style compressor on the market. Probably the most versatile compressor ever made.

Ampex is a mastering must!
I wasn’t sure this was going to be worth the expense for mastering recordings. On a new release I used this plugin on every single track’s master fader. You can really notice the difference, whereas the Studer on individual tracks is more subtle. The Ampex is now something I (always) use to master recordings just like the SSL G-Buss compressor is a staple. Highly recommended.
