UAD-2 review:

Installation runs smooth, contacted support for my plugins, got answer quite fast. My biggest issue with UAD-1: the latency is better now. Notice the new UAD-2 plugins uses much CPU, sounds lovely though!

The UAD 2 is great, but you better have a gigantic power supply in your computer.

I replaced 3 UAD-1 card with a UAD-2 Quad awhile back. I had a 600 watt powers supply in the computer. I could not get the UAD-2 card to authorize. UA thought the card might be deffective so they sent me out a new one rihght away, which was great. But the new card had the smae problem..

Someone had told me that you need a large PSU to use the UAd-2 but I didn't really believe them. I swapped out the 600 watt with a 1000 watt and the card initialized with out a problem.

Fast forward to 2012. I swap out my last UAD-1 for a UAD-2 duo... the Quad won't take the new authorization code....WTF

Swap out the 1000 watt with a 1250 watt.... bingo.... no problem.

having the UAD2 DUO in addition to my UAD 2 Solo is really helping me give me all the instances of plugins that I need to start working on and getting through the production/mixing/recording of the full album that i'm working on.

Also huge thanks to Dan and Dave at the tech support dep't for helping me through the trade-in tech issues that I had. Without their help I would not have been able to finalize my trade-in.

Thanks UAD!!

Awesome. I was blown away by the Pultec EQ. Much more powerful than the UAD-1. Works flawlessly; easy install and upgrade.

I have Pro Tools HD 2 with last Pro Tools HD 10.2 software.
I've used and tried tons of DSP plugins (TDM) ad native plugins (Waves, McDsp, Heat, Avid, Soundtoys, Softube, etc.)
I was thinking that adding a UAD-2 to my system would be ... something you can live without: well, I was wrong !
UAD-2 Nevana adds a lot of realism to my mix and using Neve plugins seems using the real thing: you have the sense of using a real knob with a real reaction.
I'm still using TDM and native plugins: I was wrong in the sense that UA plugins add a lot (a very lot) of colors in your palette, and are something different in the sense that I think they're the "retina display" of your sound ! Luca from Bologna, Italy

The Good:
I finally upgraded my old UAD1 card for the UAD2 Duo. I'm loving the increased DSP power; I can use UAD plugins on far more tracks than before.

The Bad:
I really miss the Nigel guitar suite. That thing was an unsung hero, especially (surprisingly enough) on my bass tracks.

The Ugly:
The harsh fact is that these cards are expensive. For a proffessional studio, I'd say it's a no-brainer, but for a project studio like mine, well, let's just say my wife will not allow me to buy anything else music-related for a while.

I have been a UAD 1 user since 2002 and was in love from day one using the LA2A, 1176LN, Dreamverb, and EX-1 although I miss the Nigel Guitar Effects being that I am an endorsee of Steinberg products the new Cubase 6.50 has the Guitar Amp that has taken the place. The UAD 2 Solo gives just that added power that I need. Cannot wait to add the Studer Tape, EMT, and some of the Roland Effects that my colleagues have been raving about.. I cannot mix nor master without UAD in my signal chain - it's a must have in today's DAW world if you plan to make industry standard sonically sound records.

I'm actually mixed about 5/6 songs using only UAD plugin! ....I've done all the mixes just with my DAW: my clients are everybody really happy!
It's fantistic how I can create my sound with an accurrancy that I never had before!
Perfect hi end and really concrete bottom!
I think with UAD it' s begun a new era!

Cool guys! I'm always waiting for any news from UAD world!

All the best,

It is what it is. The beginning and end of "in the box" mixing tools. I had the duo and needed the headroom so I bought the quad. My only complaint (and it is probably not even valid) is that i don't feel as if it have doubled my headroom, but, then again, i also bought the 224 and the FATSO with the voucher i got, and those are both CPU suckers of the first degree. With the UA stuff I feel like I am done as far as "in the box" is concerned.

I was introduced to UAD-2 Plug-Ins a couple of years ago by a friend who works in a professional audio shop in Sydney, Australia. I told him I was looking for tools to help me with my mixes and at that stage, I was prepared to invest in hardware. Thanks to his introduction to Universal Audio, I found a new and more practical alternative that fits perfectly into my studio environment. Now I have two UAD-2 DUO PCI Cards and about two-dozen UAD Plug-Ins. All that's left is the enjoyment and the journey of creativity and learning. The technical side has been covered. I have the same tools as professional recording studios. Thank you, Universal Audio for helping me take a big step forward.

Really nice entry level card to get into the world of UAD plugins. The included set of plugins is already a very nice and versatile set of plugins.

Very easy installation.
Installation and use of the card has never given me any problems.

I already own a Solo and a Duo card, so this just increases my available DSP for more plugins, very nice!

Comes with a voucher. So one could get a plugin at reduced price or if one's lucky a plugin for free during one of UA's many sales.

The only minor downside I can think of is in the software; it's not possible to hide any plugins that one hasn't bought yet.

Think twice before buying a UAD card. I have been a supporter for many many years and purchased the original UAD 1 extreme card which came with 32 plug-ins and cost a reasonable sum of money. UAD decided not to support this any further and offered $200 trade in (for a card that cost $1200 +) and had to purchase a new UAD Solo card for an additional $330. To add insult to injury, in the process I also lost 12 plug-ins that were on the UAD 1 and now are not supported. It also cost me time and money (round trip to my music store). I pointed this out to UAD and asked for extra plug- in compensation- they simply avoided the subject matter in their return correspondence 3 times. So I can't fault the plug-ins but be aware, this could happen to you

This has made such a difference in my project studio. The plug ins are astounding and adds amazing tone / processing power that I would never have thought i would be able to get on my mixes

The new UAD-2 SOLO DSP accelerator is a lot better that the UAD-1. It's working perfectly, and is way faster than it's predcessor! Absolutely fantastic!
