Saturation
We have this exact tape machine at work. The plug-in sounds exactly like it or, if you want, totally different. I prefer the ability to change settings on a plug-in rather than commit to a specific real tape recording. My favourite preset is "Cassette"....seriously saturated.

Try it!
I haven't purchased neither of the tape emulations, but I used my free trial and this is just musical, I'll def purchase it in the future. So many usable options, it's hard to mess up something when using this plugin.

Top Tape Tracking Tool
This thing is powerful. I use it for drums mostly, but have used it on guitars and vocals too.
Sounds great when pushed into the reds on peaks. I try to aim for +1 or +2 on the meter with drums.
If you use the Ampex tape plugin, this is a nice compliment to that. Together they can really get an authentic vintage sound.
I've only worked with tape a handful of times, but this gives me the freedom to play with it and not worry about breaking anything.
Getting creative with this can also give you some cool effects!

Just Brilliant!
Having used Slate VTM for some time I had heard a lot about this plug so obviously once I got on the UAD train it was essential I check it out. It going across all the tracks is where it is at. While I love the VTM still and it has a place being my 2buss tape The Studer has taken the individual tracks in spades. This plug brings so much to the sound you will find you need less compression and eq. So much to the point where you will be doing things like a real engineer and only using them as need be basis. Meaning rather than throwing a bunch stuff on tracks once you get things close to where you want them you really question if you need anymore! Great plugin and worth getting because it will be used every session which makes the cost worth

Great Tape even if you have ALOT of others!
I have probably most if not all other tapes by other makers and of all of them Slate's is the better fit for the tape sound to my ears. I didn't really care for it across all the tracks though. That is where the Studer has really shined. The controls are great! Most people already on UAD already know such things but if you're skipping this one due to having other tapes? Try it!

Pathetic
Since this is 'Magneto Month' I thought I'd share my pathetic review. I started recording as a teen 30 years ago with tape and always hated it, because of the darn hiss / high end trade off with Dolby B or dbx that constantly pi$$ed me off. I welcomed the digital age and could not understand why UA would emulate antiquated technology to this extent. I demoed the A800 and believed it was just another EQ plugin with some hiss EFX for fun. But once I bought it and learned the manual inside-out and began to learn its history and what exactly I was tweaking I fell in love. OMG. I cherish 70s and Alan Parsons and boy does this bring me back to where subtle distortion and pleasant overtones shape music that is so pleasing to ears. Mm..mm .mm.mm Mm

Best tape plugin for multitrack by far
This is the best tape plugin for multitrack colour and feeling and "warmth" without exception.
It comes into its own when working across many tracks and using the gang capability.
I tend to use other plugins for tape effects and saturation on single tracks but this is my go-to for multitrack colour and feeling, bar none.

The Sound of Music
My main reason for buying a UAD card.
I remember when I was mixing the CD from my old band and, as much as I seek in Eqs that shining cymbals and the resonance of drums, and the bass presence as in my analog references, something was still missing.
After I sent my CD to the mastering, I did received my UAD and a A800 plugin.
Just one insert into the Drum Bus and anoter into Bass Bus.
All that I've searched during all Mixing time was there, at those two reels, to bring to digital domain all the harmonics and sonic sense of What we know as Music.
Today I use it also to my Mastering services, especialy to mix without this sound.
Try all the combinations of tapes and speeds to get the best result for you.

Amazing Plug In!!!
A Studer A800 in a plug in on every channel and you're recording to 2" multitrack tape, quite convincingly!!!

Buy this!
Seriously buy this! This is something that you should have in your arsenal. I pretty much just use this and forget about EQing as this thing can just give you everything. Mess with the control that are under the hood and you'll see what I mean ;)

Warmth
The Studer A800 sounds amazing on pretty much everything! I tried it out on an old mix I had done and was amazed at how much it improved the sonics and feel of the track!

The WOW factor in one plugin
The Studer A800 is hard to beat. Take any sound and put it though this with any preset you like, and you will still hear a WOW factor. For those of you who are new to UAD2 Platform, this should be one of the first plugins you purchase. Its warm magnetic tones can make even a less than great sound go up in quality a few notches. Put it on a beautiful sound and it becomes breathtaking.

Smooth tape emulation
I've owned this for a while, and I'm finally comfortable enough to write a review on it. Subtlety seems to be the key word with this thing. I don't like what it does to the low end, but find it can really warm up mids and smooths things up when pushed just a bit. I don't like kick feeding into it so I keep off of the master bus (or have kick by pass it); and same deal with drums bus. Saturating it a bit on vocals can be nice, but again subtly. This thing is a DSP hog, but I do love it for premasters. As a DUO owner, I tend to reach for other tape emulators first (e.g., J37) before using this for that reason.

Amazing recreation
Having spent countless hours operating a Studer A820 as soon as I insert the plugin version I can almost swear I can smell the acetate of s rolling 24 track machine. Being able to track through it with the apollo and mix with it on busses has instantly improved my mixes. Highly recommended.

perfect addition to Ampex
After working with UAD Ampex (which is in EVERY of my mixes - mostly on the stereo bus) i've fetched the Studer to my toolchain and are happy again - while the Ampex felivers a more subtle, but more "broad" affecting enhancement on nearly any stereo/mix bus the Studer seems to packing more heavily onto tracks, making it ideal for individual tracks to me. Compared to i.e. WAVES Kramer Master Tape it sound's a hearable step more higher / forward. This is an addicting tool which you will buy if you hear it - even. with the presets. As a next step i'll try to experiment with it as a sound design tool and investigate i.e. delaying / modulation "tricks" with it. From my view this (both) are just the best tape emus for mixing and mastering.
