Beautiful sound!

I’ve been working with it for a short time, however it’s an amazing piece for my overheads tracks. The four stars are because it would be great to have it native since there is no more support for my UAD-2 Satellite FireWire.

Great sound!

As always with UAD - amazingly beautiful sound, too much DSP power, and need for resizable GUI. Hoping for a native version in 2024! Superb on drums!!!

Rich harmonics, weight and presence. Versatile!

It's a plugin that makes a difference. It has a good emulation of an adjustable transformer (It's good, but it doesn't have the same effect as a real transformer). It offers an interesting feature to soften the highs - from attenuating digital highs to emulating a vintage sound, with exaggeratedly soft highs. The compressor is good, both in terms of sound and audio behavior. But don't buy it if you want to emulate magnetic tape sound. It offers saturation with great harmonics, but it's different. I've never had the real thing, but I really like this plugin. Without a doubt, it is one of those great-sounding plugins that offers the most features in the same product. A little difficult to understand at first, but once you learn each function and get practice, it is a practical and versatile tool. I recommend!

Very Fat & Fairly Faithful

The FATSO does a lot more than it gets credit for, and although it doesn’t sound quite like tape, it softens, glues, and fattens tracks nicely.

When comparing the plugin to my hardware, I found them to behave very similarly with the exception of the plugin’s transformer emulation. In this regard, the plugin is a bit heavier handed, and the transformer-induced harmonics sound somewhat over exaggerated.

Still, it does the thing, and I wouldn’t hesitate to use the UAD FATSO on a mix.

This plugin is due for a UI update.

Great, but agree needs a refresh!

I've had a hardware FATSO since about a year after it came out and bought the UAD plug as soon as that came out. The hardware FATSO is sweeter and more squishy or compliant, while the plugin is a bit stiffer and a little smaller sounding. The plug does a decent job getting close, the "Sr" features are great, but it's old and needs a refresh version. I agree with some others that the UAD Distressor is much closer sounding to the hardware, and they could do the same for the FATSO + mix control, more DSP efficient, etc. That said, I still use the plug all the time, it's very good in its own right, and it does have a lot of the fun, vibe and problem solving that the real thing does. It could just be better, knowing how good stuff is sounding all this time after the UAD FATSO first came out.

Is it a compressor? A tape sim? Half-bird/half-lobster?

I don't know what it is, but I dig it.

FATSO

Not as close as the distressor is to the real thing but still pretty good. Can’t go wrong with Empirical Labs emulations from UAD.

Sounds good, looks bad

I feel that the GUI for this plugin is awkward and too small. Much less friendly to use than the Distressor plugin, and obviously much clumsier than the hardware version.

Awesome!

I have been using the Distressor almost on a daily basis for the longest time and was always curious about this plugin. I'll start off by saying that the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars, is that the GUI can be a pain in the butt. It's a tiny plugin and in my big screens, I have to get close to the screen to see the parameters. That being said, the plugin sounds amazing. Beautiful rich sound.

Great and easy to use.

Really amazing plugin. I don’t have the original unit to compare with but it sounds great. The only complaint is that the GUI is a bit small. It can be hard to see on the MacBook Pro and you end up squinting a bit. It would be great if they made the plugin window resizable. But otherwise it’s fantastic. I’ll be getting the Distressor next!

Great plugin!

After using it all over mixes for 2 weeks, it became a must buy for me. Will be great to have for tracking w/Apollo as well as mixing.

Great for VOs

If you think good compression and EQ is all that's needed for Voice-Overs, which is true - wait till you use the FATSO.

Loving this on some drum bus

I've been using this on the drum bus and it's pretty sick. Not exactly tape, but sweetly crunching. Good stuff.
